ABOUT AMM:
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is not just a museum but a vibrant community hub. Our engaging suite of hands-on programming and unique locations, including our two campuses on Back Creek and the historic skipjack, Wilma Lee, make us stand out. A volunteer board of 17 distinguished community members and a professional staff oversees the operations and long-range planning for our tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are proud of our nearly 250 volunteers, organized into teams led by committed captains, who play vital roles in areas like docents, events, gardens & grounds, archives, wooden boats, Wilma Lee, and education. The AMM seeks a dedicated and knowledgeable Curator to lead our maritime collection’s preservation, interpretation, and presentation. The Curator will play a critical role in updating the museum’s interpretive plan, overseeing the renovation and enhancement of exhibits, and driving the growth and relevance of the collection. This position also involves leading and mentoring volunteers and ensuring the existing collection is meticulously maintained and accessible to the public.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpretation (60%)
- Develop new ways to engage visitors through collaborations, exhibitions, and tours that enhance understanding of Annapolis’s maritime history and ecology of the Chesapeake Bay.
- Support broader interpretive plans and collaborate with the Education team to integrate the collection into visitor experiences.
- Assist with collections-related research for staff, volunteers, and researchers.
- Build and maintain relationships within the museum and broader Annapolis community; represent AMM in lectures, training, and social media.
- Assist the Development Team with grant-funded projects, including expense tracking and preparing application narratives.
- Create blog and social media content in coordination with the Marketing Department.
Collections Care (30%)
- Manage the museum’s collections, ensuring proper care.
- Monitor environmental conditions and perform regular inspections to protect the collections.
- Implement the museum’s Collections Management Policy, including policy reviews and decisions on acquisitions or deaccessioning.
- Develop and execute care plans for objects and archival materials, addressing conservation needs.
- Maintain detailed records and oversee the digitization of archival collections.
- Grow the collection through acquisitions, manage loan agreements, and prepare exhibition documentation.
- Support the Collections Committee.
- Participate in disaster planning and maintain emergency supplies and documentation.
Supervision & Training (10%)
- Supervise and train curatorial interns and volunteers.
- Assist in training staff and docents on collections care and interpretive strategies.
- Work with housekeeping staff to assess and clean objects on view.
- Potential to supervise a part-time Collections Assistant and Archival Contractor in the future.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in history, Museum Studies, Maritime Studies, Art History, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of curatorial experience in a museum or cultural institution, focusing on history or maritime collections.
- Proven experience in exhibit design, collections management, and preservation techniques.
- Strong knowledge of museum best practices, including artifact conservation, environmental monitoring, and collections management.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills, presenting information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in collections management software (experience with the Odyssey database or similar systems is a plus).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience supervising and training volunteers, interns, or staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and lead projects from concept to completion.
- Experience in community outreach and collaboration, committed to fostering relationships within the local community.
- Ability to represent the museum in public forums, including lectures, training sessions, and social media.
- Experience managing grant-funded projects, including budgeting, tracking expenses, and preparing reports.
- Ability to develop and implement care plans for collections, including responding to conservation assessments and disaster planning.
- Familiarity with digitization processes and metadata management for archival collections.
- Competency in using digital tools for content creation, including blog posts and social media.
- A strong interest in maritime history and culture, dedicated to preserving and interpreting this heritage for the public.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) aims to inspire a connection and respect for the Chesapeake Bay for generations to come. With a mission to educate youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs, exhibits and community events. This mission is accomplished through a suite of hands-on programming including a robust educational department, winter lectures, community events and two annual fundraisers that bring visitors to two unique locations along Back Creek. The AMM is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization.
The AMM seeks a contractor position to act as lead Captain for the Skipjack Wilma Lee, based out of multiple locations on or around Back Creek in Annapolis.
One of only a few remaining Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks, the Wilma Lee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wilma Lee was built in 1940 on the Maryland eastern shore by the well-known boat builder Bronza Parks. The Wilma Lee has an LOA of 75 feet, 47 feet on deck and a 16-foot beam. She is sloop-rigged with a centerboard, and her push boat has been replaced with two inboard motors. This season a non-functioning push boat has been attached to the boat to use as an example for guests.
Wilma Lee will be used for educational programing, heritage tours, sailboat race watch cruises, specialty and sunset cruises, and private events and charters.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee operations of the Skipjack Wilma Lee, upholding high safety and professional standards for all cruises.
- Ensure timely preventative and remedial maintenance and repair of the Wilma Lee. Including seasonal maintenance, scheduling haul-outs and coordinating significant repairs with vendors and boatyards.
- Manage United States Coast Guard (USCG) certification and oversee inspections including those on Tilghman Island.
- Maintain vessel operation checklists and all records and logs required by USCG and AMM, including those related to vessel and engine maintenance, training and safety drills and rigging.
- Develop and conduct Captain and Crew training programs, to include a final sign off process for each crew member.
- Develop and administer drug and alcohol testing, CPR, First-Aid, and safety program for crew and docents and all other USCG requirements regarding the operation of a commercial passenger vehicle.
- Serve as the on-call Captain and contact.
- Ensure all passengers have an outstanding experience by utilizing strong guest service skills and exercising effective communication skills.
- Call Charter Guests if a cruise is canceled to alert them and follow the proper cancellation protocol.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must possess a current Merchant Mariner Credential of Master of Self-Propelled Vessels of at least 50 tons, including Auxiliary Sail upon Inland Waters with a satisfactory record, as well as a current Medical Certificate.
- Experience operating commercial passenger USCG “t” vessels, with experience operating a vessel similar in size to the Wilma Lee
- Have and maintain Radio Operator Permit, CPR, and First Aid Certification.
- Experience with boat maintenance and small repairs, with wooden boat maintenance experience preferred.
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects of at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for full 8-hour shift as needed.
- Willingness to be on-call and monitor the boat during inclement weather and manage emergency repairs.
- Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions and on weekends, evenings and on holidays.
- Knowledge of Chesapeake Bay ecology and environment issues facing the bay.
- Passion for sailing and educating children.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, high energy, and enthusiasm.
- Flexibility and the ability to problem solve.
- Must pass a background check and submit to pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing per the requirements of the USCG.
- Must be a US citizen or permanent resident per the requirements of the USCG.

Captains oversee training and scheduling, ensuring smooth operations.
The Wilma Lee, a unique vessel listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the few remaining Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks. It is used for various educational and recreational activities, including heritage tours, sailboat races, watch cruises, private events, and charters.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteer Coordinator – 40%
- Review new applications, interview, and vet volunteers.
- Oversee and assess volunteer needs, identifying gaps in service areas and strategically assigning volunteers to address those needs.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Captains to ensure effective deployment and fulfillment of goals and incentives.
- Liaison with Volunteer Captains, enlist new Captains as needed, and establish goals and metrics.
- Solicit and manage volunteer waivers.
- Recruit, train, and retain volunteers for assigned service areas with volunteer captains’ assistance.
- Schedule and organize volunteer appreciation events; facilitate volunteer awards and incentives.
- Network with community resources and represent the volunteer program within the community.
- Serves as a liaison to facilitate communication between the volunteers and staff.
- Maintains volunteer recruitment and retention records.
- Recruit volunteers through various techniques (databases, e-mail, press releases).
- Coordinate teams of volunteers for new or large-scale projects.
- Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and well-placed.
Wilma Lee Program Coordinator – 60%
- Create and manage the tour schedule, programs, and charters, coordinating with all relevant parties to ensure timely and efficient tour operations.
- Develop and maintain the program budget, monitoring expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility and optimal allocation of resources.
- Plan and coordinate the crew and docent work schedules, ensuring adequate staffing and smooth operations for all tours and events.
- Recruit, train, and onboard volunteer docents for heritage and specialty cruises.
- Ordered and managed the inventory of food and beverages, ensuring all tours and events were well-stocked with quality provisions.
- Ensure the boat is adequately stocked and maintained, coordinating housekeeping tasks to uphold cleanliness and order.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for guests, managing communications and coordinating logistical details to ensure a seamless experience.
- Conduct guest surveys and analyze feedback to continuously improve the quality of tours and services.
- Manage the collection and equitable distribution of tips among the crew, ensuring transparency and fairness.
- Evaluate program effectiveness through data analysis, propose enhancements to optimize operations and guest satisfaction, and work with the marketing director to ensure high passenger counts.
- Oversee the ticketing process, ensuring accurate bookings, efficient sales, and a smooth check-in experience for all guests.
- Coordinate CPR and First Aid Training for crew: Organize and oversee essential safety training sessions, ensuring all crew members have the necessary skills to handle emergencies.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with volunteers, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Strong customer service, ensuring a positive experience for both internal and external contacts.
- Proficiency in computer applications and software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Highly organized with practical time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Previous experience as a volunteer coordinator, program manager, or non-profit.
- Flexible and adaptable, able to navigate and contribute to a dynamic work environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions independently.
- Candidates should possess a solid understanding of boats, including their operation, maintenance, and safety procedures, to ensure effective management and coordination of maritime tours and events.
- Willingness and ability to work weekends and nights as needed to accommodate volunteer schedules and special projects.
