Part-time Hourly Seasonal Contractor

ABOUT AMM: The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is not just a museum but a vibrant community hub. We serve Anne Arundel County and beyond, educating youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. We host an engaging suite of hands-on programming in unique locations, including our two campuses on Back Creek and the historic skipjack, Wilma Lee. The Education Department serves approximately 12,000 youth annually educating them on the history, ecology, and cultural traditions of the Chesapeake Bay.
Position Description: The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is seeking a qualified applicant for a year-round part-time position focusing on environmental education and interpretation. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has a background in environmental science, museum studies, biology, education, or other related fields. This position will run from February-December 2025, but exact start and end dates are flexible and based on demand for school programs. Most programs will take place during the school day, Monday through Friday with some opportunities on the weekends.
The primary role of an Instructor is to deliver impactful educational experiences for a diverse audience of K-12 youth and adults. Programs take place outdoors, on the water and in classrooms. An ideal candidate is creative, passionate, and flexible, with the ability to work well with a small team, and excited to educate in the field.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants
- Teach programs, on and off site, for groups of Pre-K-12th grade students, scouts, and camps
- Organize and prepare materials before and after programs
- Create lesson plans and design activities to enhance educational programming
- Assist program managers with administrative tasks, attendance, equipment maintenance and animal care
- Support AMM events, staff tables, exhibits, and special programs
- Create and maintain a safe, fun, learning atmosphere for children
- Reports to, and work closely with, the Education Programs Coordinator and Lead Educator with all aspects of the education department
Desired Qualifications:
- Education experience with youth
- Background in environmental education, museum studies, biology, history, or related field
- Strong passion for the environment and desire to teach in the field
- A passion for the Chesapeake Bay, its people and our shared maritime heritage
- Ability to foster positive work relationships with AMM staff, interns, and volunteers
- Ability to problem solve and adjust to program changes
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- General knowledge of watersheds and other aquatic/marine ecosystems
- Must be comfortable working outside in various weather conditions, in/near the water, and able to lift 25 lbs.
- CPR certified preferred
- Must pass a CJIS background check

Position Description: AMM is launching an outdoor-based, maritime-themed preschool program for children ages 3.5-5. This program utilizes AMM’s unique waterfront setting and new outdoor classroom to foster immersive, child-led learning experiences. The Early Childhood Program Director will develop and manage the program, including curriculum creation, staff oversight, and direct teaching. The Early Childhood Program Director will also be responsible for implementing other AMM programs targeting early learners, such as a caretaker and me, and summer camps.
Responsibilities:
Program Development and Management:
- Design and implement an outdoor preschool program that is aligned with AMM’s mission and meets the regulatory requirements of the State of Maryland.
- Establish licensing compliance protocols, including documentation, staff training, and safety procedures.
- Develop a curriculum rooted in child-led, experiential, and place-based learning approaches.
- Manage program administration, including registration, health and safety policies, licensing, and family communication.
- Oversee program budget, expenditures, and materials.
Teaching and Leadership:
- Serve as the lead teacher for the preschool program.
- Lead “caretaker and me” classes, summer camps, and preschool sessions.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging outdoor learning environment in all seasons.
- Mentor and evaluate teaching staff, facilitating professional development opportunities. o Build relationships with families, partners, and the community through events and open communication.
- Plan and implement family activities such as community service days and seasonal celebrations.
Collaboration and Reporting:
- Work with senior staff on strategic planning, marketing, advocacy, and growth initiatives.
- Provide program data, write grant content, and support marketing efforts.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education
- At least 3 years of experience in outdoor or forest school programs.
- Credentials to direct a licensed preschool or early learning program in Maryland or the commitment to obtain by June 2025.
- Certifications in First Aid and CPR.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. • Knowledge of local ecology, with naturalist experience preferred.
- Physically able to work outdoors year-round and support children as needed.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
- Experience with emergent curriculum and nature-based education frameworks.
- Ability to balance administrative duties with direct teaching.
- Passion for nature and early childhood education.
- Flexible, collaborative, and resourceful.
- Patient, positive, and resilient in outdoor settings.
- Eager to inspire a love of nature and learning in young children.

AMM seeks contractual Lead Educators for its Summer Camp. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about educating youth, possess a love for the outdoors, and have prior summer camp or environmental education experience. AMM Summer Camp runs from June 23rd through August 22nd, in addition to staff training prior to camp opening. Lead Educators will work 40 hours a week, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, M-F. Compensation for this position is $20/hour.

Lead Educator Responsibilities
- Supervise and lead a group of up to 18 campers (K-9) through daily activities including environmental education programming, outdoor exploration, games, crafts, kayaking, etc.
- Ensure children’s safety, manage behavior, and act as a role model and mentor
- Create comprehensive lesson plans for week-long summer camp session and/or aftercare
- Manage all aspects of AMM’s day camps including daily setup, clean up, and management of materials
- Ensure the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter
- Communicate with Education Center Staff regarding concerns, challenges, and camper experiences
- Communicate proactively with and respectfully manage interns and volunteers
- Assist and supervise campers while kayaking
- Maintain accurate program records including health logs and daily attendance
- Learn, understand, and implement camp emergency policies
Skills and Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with children
- Prior lesson planning experience
- Strong organizational, group, and time management skills
- Highly adaptable and able to problem solve
- Energetic, enthusiastic, flexible, overall positive attitude, and willingness to work outside in all weather conditions
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects, at least 50 pounds (kayaks and other equipment)
- CPR/First Aid Certification required – Training available, if not already certified
- Must obtain background checks

Our summer internship program offers great experience for college students interested in the following fields of study: education, environmental studies, science, communication, or outdoor recreation. Interns will receive hands-on training and experience with the fundamentals of environmental education best practices, lesson plan creation, and program facilitation. Interns will facilitate programs for summer camp and visiting groups. Interns will earn a weekly stipend of up to $530 over the course of the 10-week internship. Interns must be available to work at least 8 weeks over the summer, between June 23rd and August 22nd, in addition to staff training prior to camp opening.

Internship Responsibilities
- Supervise group of up to 18 campers with a team of 2-3 counselors
- Plan and lead at least one environmental education lesson weekly
- Organize and lead nature exploration, games, and other recreation activities
- Assist with set-up and clean-up from daily camp activities
- Assist and supervise campers while kayaking – Training is provided
- Respond appropriately to any medical issues and emergencies with first-aid or CPR (training available, if not already certified)
- Assist with aquarium and animal care
- Currently enrolled in college or recent college graduate
- Strong interest in teaching and environmental education
- Energetic, enthusiastic, flexible, overall positive attitude, and willingness to work outside in summer conditions
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with children and adults
- Preferred – teaching experience and/or environmental studies background
- Must obtain background checks
Help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by teaching and exploring with campers at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s Summer Camp! Assist in delivering hands-on environmental education, facilitating outdoor experiences, and developing relationships with campers in a FUN summer camp environment, all while earning student service learning hours. Interns must be available to work at least 6 weeks over the summer, between June 23rd and August 22nd, in addition to training prior to camp opening.
