Summer 2024 – Environmental Education Internship
High School Students
Help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by teaching and exploring with campers at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s Summer Camp! Assist in delivering hands-on environmental education, facilitating outdoor experiences, and developing relationships with campers in a FUN summer camp environment, all while earning student service learning hours and a stipend of up to $100 per week for the internship. Interns must be available to work at least 6 weeks over the summer, between June 24th and August 23rd, in addition to training prior to camp opening.
AMM Overview
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s mission is to educate youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs, exhibits, and community events. During the summer, AMM runs a popular 9-week summer camp program for over 500 local youth and provides field trip experiences for visiting groups. Our summer internship program offers great experience for students interested in any of these fields of study: education, environmental studies, science, communication, or outdoor recreation. Interns will receive hands-on training and experience with the fundamentals of environmental education best practices, lesson plan creation, and program facilitation. Interns will assist in the facilitation of programs for summer camp and visiting groups.
Internship Responsibilities
- Assist with supervision and group management of up to 18 campers with a team of 2-3 counselors, including a teacher, college intern, and other volunteers
- Observe and assist fellow instructors with lessons focusing on environmental studies, ecology, art, and recreation
- Assist with set-up and clean-up from daily camp activities
- Organize and lead games, nature exploration, and “down-time” activities
- Plan and lead at least one environmental education lesson during the summer – Interns will receive training in writing objectives, adapting existing resources, and using best practices in outdoor classroom management – Interns will receive constructive feedback after their lesson
- Assist campers while kayaking – Training is provided
- Assist with aquarium and animal care

- Must enjoy working with children
- Energetic, enthusiastic, flexible, and overall positive attitude
- Willingness to work outside in summer conditions
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with children and adults

College Students
Our summer internship program offers great experience for college students interested in the following fields of study: education, environmental studies, science, communication, or outdoor recreation. Interns will receive hands-on training and experience with the fundamentals of environmental education best practices, lesson plan creation, and program facilitation. Interns will facilitate programs for summer camp and visiting groups. Interns will earn an hourly rate of $13.25/hour paid out in weekly increments (up to $530/week) over the course of the up to 10-week internship. Interns must be available to work at least 6 weeks over the summer, between June 24th and August 23rd, in addition to staff training prior to camp opening.

Internship Responsibilities
- Supervise group of up to 18 campers with a team of 2-3 counselors
- Plan and lead at least one environmental education lesson weekly
- Organize and lead nature exploration, games, and other recreation activities
- Assist and supervise campers while kayaking – Training is provided
- Respond appropriately to any medical issues and emergencies with first-aid or CPR
- Training available, if not already certified
- Assist with aquarium and animal care
- Create electronic portfolio showcasing internship experience
Intern Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in college or recent college graduate
- Strong interest in teaching and environmental education
- Energetic, enthusiastic, flexible, overall positive attitude, and willingness to work outside in summer conditions
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with children and adults
- Preferred – teaching experience and/or environmental studies background
- Must obtain background checks

About AMM:
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is a significant community asset serving Anne Arundel County and beyond. AMM educates youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs, exhibits, and community events. We accomplish this mission through an engaging suite of hands-on programming and by bringing visitors to our two campuses on Back Creek and aboard the Museum’s historic skipjack, Wilma Lee.
A volunteer board of 17 distinguished community members and a professional staff oversee the operations and long-range planning for this tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are proud to share that our thriving cohort of nearly 250 volunteers is involved in all aspects of the Museum’s functions. Our volunteers are divided into teams, each led by a committed captain. These teams, focusing on docents, events, gardens & grounds, archives, wooden boats, Wilma Lee, and education, play vital roles in our mission. Captains oversee training and scheduling, ensuring smooth operations.
Job Responsibilities:
• Review new applications, interview, and vet volunteers.
• Oversee and assess volunteer needs, identifying gaps in service areas and strategically assigning volunteers to address those needs.
• Collaborate with Volunteer Captains to ensure effective deployment and fulfillment of goals and incentives.
• Serve as Captain for the Garden & Grounds Team by leading and coordinating garden and ground maintenance activities.
• Work closely with volunteers in the Garden & Grounds team, providing guidance and support.
• Liaison with Volunteer Captains and enlist new Captains as needed.
• Solicit and manage volunteer waivers.
• Recruit, train, and retain volunteers for assigned service areas with volunteer captains’ assistance.
• Schedule and organize Volunteer Appreciation events; facilitate volunteer awards and incentives.
• Network with community resources and represent the volunteer program within the community.
• Serves as a liaison to facilitate communication between the volunteers and staff.
• Maintains volunteer recruitment and retention records.
• Recruit volunteers through various techniques (databases, e-mail, press releases).
• Coordinate teams of volunteers for new or large-scale projects.
• Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and well-placed.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with volunteers, staff, and external stakeholders.
• Strong customer service, ensuring a positive experience for both internal and external contacts.
• Proficiency in computer applications and software, including Microsoft Office Suite
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Highly organized with practical time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
• Previous experience as a volunteer coordinator or non-profit
• Flexible and adaptable, able to navigate and contribute to a dynamic work environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions independently.
• Proficiency in general maintenance practices and a basic knowledge of gardening principles.
• Willingness and ability to work weekends and nights as needed to accommodate volunteer schedules and special projects.
