About:
At the time Captain Miller was stationed at the Annapolis Yacht Yard, the famous Yacht America was as well. The America was a 19th-century racing yacht and the first winner of the America's Cup international sailing trophy. The ship was laid down in 1850 and was one of only three ships in commission in the U.S. Navy in both the Civil War and World War II. It had come to the Annapolis Yacht Yard to be repaired, but when focus had to be directed to building boats for the war, the ship fell into disrepair and met the fate that Captain Miller recalls in this interview. Captain Miller saved pieces of the ship to create this wooden model to honor the boat and its long history.
