Captain Richards T. Miller

Captain Richards T. Miller USN (Ret) was a Naval architect and engineer. He graduated in 1940 from the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, and was an honorary member of the Naval Academy Class of 1941, and did his graduate work at MIT. During WWII he served as Assistant Hull Superintendent and then Assistant Supervisor of Shipbuilding at the Annapolis Yacht Yard. In September 1941, he received orders to report to the Annapolis Yacht Yard as Resident Supervisor of Shipbuilding. Until his retirement in 1968 Captain Miller, worked in several other positions in Naval engineering. Captain Miller married his late wife Jean Spear Miller in 1941 and, after her passing due to cancer he married his second wife Alice Houghton Miller in 1984. Captain Miller and Jean had two daughters, Patricia Miller Fishburn and Linda Miller Carrier. He had two step-children with Alice, Capt. Thomas C. Houghton, USNR (Ret) and Susan Houghton Hartman. Captain Miller has written several papers in the field of engineering and on sailing yacht design. Captain Miller worked on many notable ships during his career, including the Yacht America, PT boats, and the battleships IOWA and MISSOURI.
