About the Object:
The McNasby Oyster Company is the last vestiage of a once thriving oyster industry in Annapolis. As seen in these images, women worked alongside men and often stood for hours shucking oysters. Shuckers like Lyle Smith, share their memories of working in the oyster house through oral histories. Lyle, who worked at the company for over 30 years, recalls joining his grandmother to shuck oysters and learning from her. Generations, men and women, black and white worked side by side.
More Information:
Though the workforce seen in these images is male dominated, women used the same tools, stations, and other materials demonstrating some degree of workplace equality.
