SUMMARY:Celebrating American Sailing\, Presenter: Gary Jobson
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE for in-person registration\, Click HERE for virtual registration. \nIt was a busy year in 2024 for the sport of sailing.   A team of 13 American sailors competed in the Olympic Games in Marseilles\, France and the 37th Defense of the America’s Cup was sailed in Barcelona\, Spain.   Annapolis Hall of Fame sailor covered the Olympics for NBC and traveled to Barcelona for the America’s Cup.  He will present a first- hand account of the action from his unique perspective.  Jobson will also give a presentation on the state of sailing and where the sport is heading in the future.   He will also talk about his new book\, The Characters of the America’s Cup. \nGary Jobson is an award-winning journalist who has covered nine America’s Cups and seven Olympic Games for television.  He has been inducted in the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.  He has won major regattas including the America’s Cup\, Congressional Cup. Southern Circuit\, Annapolis to Newport Race\, the Fastnet Race and many other offshore races\, one-design championships\, and cruised some of the most remote regions of the world.  Jobson has written 23 books on sailing.  He is often seen sailing his 32-foot day sailor on the Chesapeake Bay. \n\n$10 Admission and FREE for First Mate & Above Museum Members. From enslaved cooks and watermen\, to Black entrepreneurs persevering and profiting during the height of Jim Crow\, immigrant spice merchants and migrant pickers\, Livie will share the history of the Chesapeake’s iconic fishery—and explore the ways climate change and globalization are threatening its future. \nKate Livie is a professional Chesapeake educator\, writer and social historian. As an Eastern Shore native\, Kate is passionate about the Chesapeake Bay’s culture\, history\, traditions and environment\, and contributes regularly to publications like Chesapeake Bay Magazine\, Baltimore Magazine and Edible Delmarva\, and has hosted programs for MPT\, NPR and the History Channel. Her 2015 book\, Chesapeake Oysters: The Bay’s Foundation and Future\, won the Maryland Historical Society’s Marion Brewington prize for Maritime History. Formerly the director of education and associate curator at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum\, Kate teaches courses about the Bay’s culture and environment at Washington College and lectures on Chesapeake topics at cultural institutions\, colleges and non-profits throughout the region. SUMMARY:Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse Celebrates 150 Years of Service by John Potvin
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE for in-person registration\, Click HERE for virtual registration. \nSince 1875\, the Thomas Point Shoal lighthouse has been guiding mariners up the bay past one of the most notorious shoals on the Chesapeake. The shoal has seen it’s share of historical events\, including the grounding of a British warship in 1812 and the scene of battles during the Oyster wars. \n2025 is the 150th anniversary of the lighthouse lighting. We will explore the different generations of history from the United States Lighthouse Service\, the Coast Guard era\, the automation of the light and ultimately the transfer of the light to the City of Annapolis and cooperative partnership with the Annapolis Maritime Museum\, the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society and the long term commitment of this National Historic Landmark. \nFrom there\, we will discuss the repair\, maintenance and preservation of the lighthouse\, including some of the pitfalls and lessons learned.
