Boat Donations

Thank you for considering the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) for your boat donation. All proceeds from the sale of your boat support our mission to educate youth and adults about the area’s rich unique maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through the Museum’s environmental education programs.

We strive to sell donated boats quickly and at the highest possible price to maximize your deduction in a timely manner.

If you have questions, please email Lizzie Hall or call at 410-295-0104 x20.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of boats do you accept?

We accept new and functioning, used boats in good (or better) working condition. Vessels accepted include power boats, sailboats and PWCs.  All potential donations must be titled/documented and free of all encumbrances.  They must not be under current contract with a broker.

Is my boat donation fully tax deductible under Federal law?

Per Federal law, boat donors may only claim the price of the boat sold by AMM for tax donation purposes. AMM will notify donors immediately upon the sale of the boat. AMM will submit an IRS Form 8282 (Donee Information Return) to the donor with a copy to the IRS following the sale. The donor is required to furnish a Social Security number for this federal form. 100% of your donation goes towards our award-winning environmental education programs.

Will you pick up my boat?

While we prefer you to bring your boat to us, we are happy to provide pickup at a time and place convenient for you.

How do I transfer the title?

The title to the boat should be “clean and clear” of any liens before being signed over to AMM. When completing the title transfer, sign AMM as the purchaser and write “charitable donation” or $0 in the blank space for the sale amount. Trailers require title as well.

Once completed, AMM will handle all title transfers and provide you IRS Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions) to show that AMM has accepted the donation. Form 8283 must be attached to Form 1040 when your file your taxes. Once sold, you will be sent all necessary tax documentation, including IRS Form 8282 (Donee Information Return) for your records.

Other Important Information

Always consider consulting a tax professional regarding any major donation to a tax exempt organization.

A boat donation to a charity is only deductible if the donor is itemizing deductions.
